What You Should Know About Cynophobia

By Robin Setser

It's natural to be fearful of a dog that growls or angrily barks at you, as it indicates danger. What happens, though, if someone tries to avoid a dog that's simply eating, playing, or minding its own business? Cynophobia is defined as the fear of dogs, and it's one of the more common phobias in the world. For a better understanding of what this condition entails, here is some useful information to keep in mind.

The symptoms of cynophobia are numerous, as the likes of Assisi Animal Health will attest. For one, if you actively avoid these dogs when walking about, chances are that you have this phobia. It's also worth noting a sense of anxiety that may wash over you, even to the point where it stops you from carrying out your daily activities and duties. Symptoms like these are common and people that fall under this umbrella will know when they're experiencing them.

Now that you know the signs of cynophobia, you may be curious to know what causes it. What makes someone so fearful of canines that it impacts their day-to-day life? One of the most common is early exposure to a dog that resulted in a bad experience. While the animal may not have bitten, even a growl or the tail coming down can be off-putting. This isn't the only cause, of course, but it's a typical story all the same.

Cynophobia is troublesome, to say the least, but it's not like it can't be cured. As a matter of fact, it's been proven that it can be remedied with therapy, which focuses on the negativity that some people associate with dogs. By doing so, they will be able to take said negativity and rework it, in a sense, so that it becomes more positive. In simplest terms, this will help people become less tense when they're around dogs.

There's a difference between not being a "dog person" and actively avoiding these animals by all means. Cynophobia is nothing short of hindering, especially when you consider that dogs are among the most popular pets in the world. If you feel like you're suffering from this condition, you should know that there are ways to help yourself. While you may not magically become a canine enthusiast, at least you won't tense up at the sight of one of these animals.
